Red Cross Disaster Volunteers

Whether it's a house fire or a hurricane, the American Red Cross is one of the first responders to assist your family, your neighbor and your community. We are dependent upon trained volunteers to help in disasters. We need to be continually prepared to respond quickly from Westmoreland & Colonial Beach, to Essex, Richmond County, Northumberland, Lancaster and Middlesex counties. We have developed teams in each area and provide the necessary training to be ready in an emergency.

Staffing a shelter requires over 40 trained people. However, in an actual disaster there will be a large number of the trained volunteers who will not be able to respond. Therefore, we must train a large number of people in our community to assist, whether during a house fire, at a shelter, preparing for set-up and take-down, and after the disaster doing disaster assessment, to name a few of the opportunities.

This is an opportunity that is not going to be a daily need, nor is it something that will interfere with most jobs since many businesses will be closed during a disaster. Do something for your family and your community and volunteer to be available during a disaster in our greatest time of need. Volunteer application, background check and training will be required.
